On April 12th at 6:00pm, in Room 3, the Kindergarten teachers, Transitional Kindergarten teachers and our Principal, Julie Ebert will be hosting a kindergarten informational meeting for parents.  The purpose is to provide you with some helpful information about the Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten programs as you plan for next year.

I am so honored to share with you that Vine Hill received a Gold Ribbon Award from the State of California. This award was earned because of our exemplary teaching using the Reading and Writing Workshop model. I want to thank our dedicated teachers and parent community for your support and of course, a big thank you to our students for their hard work and commitment to ongoing learning.

Healthy Class Party and Birthday Celebration Ideas

Let’s face it kids like parties (parents too!)  There are numerous benefits to having healthy school celebrations.  Research clearly demonstrates that good nutrition is linked to positive behavior and higher academic performance.  Healthy parties at school provide consistent messages about Vine Hill’s commitment to promoting healthy behaviors.  They also promote a healthy school environment in which students receive consistent, reliable health information and ample opportunity to use it.  Finally, healthy class parties can create excitement about nutrition by helping children to try new and healthy snacks.  Here are some suggestions.




  • Light or low-fat popcorn

  • Pretzels or different shapes

  • Low-sugar cereal and milk

  • Whole grain tortilla chips and salsa

  • Whole grain crackers and cheese

  • Bagels and cream cheese

  • Pita chips or pita triangles and hummus

  • Cheese quesadillas

  • Bean and cheese burritos (make your own)

  • Hard boiled eggs (peel your own)

  • Nuts (check for allergies)

  • Dried fruit

  • Friendship trail mix:  All students bring in a contribution to combine and share


Fruits and Vegetables

  • Raw veggies with salads dressing, hummus, guacamole, salsa, or peanut butter (check for allergies)

  • Fresh Fruit, cut up or served on kabobs

  • Friendship fruit or vegetable salad.  All students bring in a contribution to combine and share.

Sweets and Treats

  • Graham crackers (try the cinnamon kind)

  • Fruit juice bars

  • Yogurt tubes (served frozen)

  • Berries with low-fat whipped cream

  • Angel food cake with fresh berries or fruit

  • Yogurt and fruit smoothies

  • Yogurt and granola (try a yogurt bar with toppings)

  • Animal crackers

  • Pumpkin, banana zucchini bread.

Give it a try without Snacks

  • Birthday child brings in a small toy, pencil or eraser for other students.

  • Parents read your child’s favorite book to the class

  • Parents come during recess or PE and organize a game your child likes (with teacher approval)

  • Teachers have all sorts of ideas about how to make school celebrations healthy.  Feel free to check in with your teacher for some help
