Update from the Superintendent - March 30th
Posted 3/30/22

Dear Parents and SVUSD Community,

We are rounding out the month of March and heading into spring break which is April 4-8, returning on Monday, April 11. Similar to last year, we are clearing up from COVID cases and we have the lowest positivity rate yet since the beginning of 2022. This week, each school site will be distributing home COVID test kits for students and staff to use the day prior to our return from spring break. Rather than ask our staff to distribute the test kits Sunday, April 10, we are asking families to keep them and utilize them for a safe return back to school the week following spring break. There are several student activities and events happening at the end of the year and we are hopeful that we are able to successfully implement them all, assuming the COVID case rate stays the same. You’ll be hearing from each respective site on their plan to issue and distribute the home test kits.

Here are the instructions for the take home COVID test kits:

English Instructions for COVID home test kits

Spanish Instructions for COVID home test kits

We have several wonderful academic and extracurricular enrichment activities planned at all of our sites. It has been great to be out at the school sites and see students engaging with one another with small groups and classroom-based activities.

I’m excited to share with you that our district is partnering with Champions, the third-party provider for our before and after school programs next year, who will be also offering a summer session for younger students hosted at Scotts Valley Middle School. More information will be coming out to you soon.

As a reminder, for families interested in on-site before and after school programs for elementary students next school year, please go onto the district website and under the News and Info tab click on Childcare.  This page contains the  informational video provided by Champions for anyone who was not able to attend the parent information session earlier this month. Champions will be providing the district a registration link that we will be sending out to elementary parents.

As we near the end of the year, we enter the season of state assessments. The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) is the state academic testing program used throughout California. Students in 3rd through 8th grade will be taking both English Language Arts and Mathematics assessments. Students in grades 5th, 8th, 11th and 12th will be participating in the California Assessment of Science (CAST) as well. These assessments are only a snapshot of the growth your child has made over the past school year and while we want our students to show all they know, we recognize this is just one piece of a larger picture of student achievement. Student reports will be sent home to families in August.

Upon return from spring break, we have seven weeks remaining in this school year! There are so many wonderful end of the year celebratory events - please be watching for the school announcements regarding these upcoming events!

An exciting new event that the District is sponsoring is a Multicultural Fair to be held at Vine Hill School on Sunday, May 1st, 12:00 - 3:00 pm.  SVUSD families and community members are all invited to attend.

I hope you enjoy your spring break to the fullest, even if it is just spent enjoying quiet moments at home with your family.  Whatever you decide to do, please be safe, have fun, and enjoy this respite!

Most sincerely,

Tanya Krause,
